Should You Be Wearing Polyester?

Posted by Christina Herum on

Let's face it, polyester has gotten kind of a bad wrap when it comes to clothes. For me, one of the first things that comes to mind is bad polyester leisure suits from the 1970's. Not exactly the image you want.

The truth is polyester-based clothes aren't just to be hidden away in the back of your closet anymore. There are some great advantages to using polyester fabric!

Polyester fabric and fibers are incredibly strong and durable. Compared to cotton, polyester is going to withstand more wear and tear. Clothing made from polyester is also less likely to fade, will hold it's shape well, and it won't shrink. In additional to these fantastic benefits, it is also more resistant to wrinkles than cotton, which can be a huge benefit when you're traveling. Who wants to open a suitcase full of wrinkled clothes?

While there are many benefits to polyester, you probably won't see many 100% polyester clothes in your normal day-to-day wear. What you will find, though, is a blend of cotton and polyester or a triblend, which is typically a blend of polyester, cotton, and rayon. Our Weightless, Night & Day, and Vintage collections are all great examples of cotton/poly blends and triblends.

Clothing that contains a blend of cotton and polyester is really the best of both worlds. You get incredible softness from the cotton, but it has the durability of polyester. It is breathable and cool during activities, but it will hold it's shape and color over a longer period of time.

So the next time you find yourself clothes shopping, don't be so quick to count out something that may have polyester in it. You might be missing out on some great quality pieces to add to your closet.
